What is the prickly pear plant? 

The prickly pear plant (Opuntia) is a type of cactus that is native to the Americas but has since been introduced to other parts of the world.

It is characterised by its flat, paddle-shaped pads that are covered in spines and small, hair-like prickles.

The fruit of the prickly pear, also known as cactus pear, is edible and commonly used in cuisine, while the pads are sometimes used in traditional medicine and as a source of fibre.
